About the COGITO Project

COGITO stands for “Construction phase digital twin model” and is a research and innovation project funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 programme (Grant Agreement No. 958310).

The project focuses on improving how infrastructure construction projects are managed during the construction phase, where coordination challenges, safety risks, and quality issues are most critical.

A Real-Time Digital Twin for Construction

At the core of COGITO is the introduction of a real-time Digital Twin that reflects the actual state of a construction project. Unlike traditional static models, this Digital Twin continuously integrates data from the construction site, enabling better visibility and faster decision-making.

The Digital Twin supports:

  • Continuous monitoring of construction activities
  • Early identification of safety hazards
  • Faster detection of quality deviations
  • Improved coordination between project stakeholders

Interoperability and Lean Construction

COGITO recognises that construction projects rely on many different digital tools and systems. To address this, the project develops methods to ensure interoperability across the Digital Twin ecosystem.

At the same time, COGITO aligns with Lean Construction principles, focusing on eliminating waste, improving workflow reliability, and maximising value for all stakeholders involved.

From BIM to Construction 4.0

By harmonising Digital Twins with Building Information Modelling (BIM), COGITO establishes a practical Construction 4.0 toolbox tailored to real construction site needs.
